Although it isn’t a well publicized fact, Paris is the second largest European city; with over 30 million foreign visitors annually it is a very popular destination. No visit to Europe would be complete without a short stay in Paris; you will however, discover that more time is required to fully appreciate what it has to offer.
It is known for its wonderful buildings, style, excellent food and wine; it has much to offer visitors who adore culture, even if it is only for a long weekend. Like most European cities, Paris is easy to get around; there is an excellent underground system called the Metro which runs regular trains into the city center and is very easy to understand.
You can’t miss the Eiffel Tower, mainly because it’s over three hundred meters high; it can be seen throughout most locations around the city. Illuminated in the evening, it is one of the most beautiful sights in the entire city; if you are really enthusiastic you can take a tour where the guide will tell you how this beautiful tower was built.
A trip down the Champs Elysees is encouraged when you visit Paris as this is the city’s most famous street; you can see beautiful shops, sit and drink coffee from the many cafes or have a meal in a first class restaurant. This avenue may be select but it attracts large numbers of visitors daily; the exclusive five star hotels situated in this more select part of the city might be out of most visitors’ price range.
The city’s famous museum, the Louvre is huge and worth a visit if you have the time; it houses over three hundred thousand exhibits but not all of them are ever on display at the same time. Visitors on short stays in Paris could easily be overwhelmed; approximately 8 million visitors a year come to see the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa, both of which are on display. What makes Paris special is the number of artists that have been attracted to this great capital; chances are that you will have the opportunity to see a number of famous paintings whilst you’re visiting.
Paris is also the home of the equally famous Arc de Triomphe which Napoleon had constructed in the early part of the 19th century; to honor his generals (and his troops) he had their names inscribed upon it. The Arc is the focal point of the city and contains an observatory to view the local area; it is located in Place Charles de Gaulle where twelve of the city’s main avenues start, including Avenue de Champs Elysees.
Of course this article can only give a small sample places to visit; these are however, the most popular with regular tours arranged, many of which are either free or at a subsidized cost. A Paris short stay vacation will probably be best suited as just a taster of the city; the churches, cathedrals and other museums will just have to wait for another time.
